In today’s world, the Gen Z generation is breaking barriers and making their mark in unique and impactful ways. One such inspiring story is that of Federico, a 16-year-old boy teen volunteer from Italy, who joined Volunteer Society Nepal’s 5-week volunteering with trekking program. Federico’s journey is a testament to the fact that age is just a number when it comes to making a difference and embracing new experiences.
Federico was warmly welcomed by our Program Manager, Mr. Bishal Shrestha, upon his arrival in Kathmandu. Federico was introduced to his host family, where he would be staying during his time in Nepal. The host family’s warm hospitality made him feel at home from the very first day.
On his first day, Federico attended a Nepali language class and a cultural induction session. These sessions were designed to help him familiarize himself with Nepali culture and people. The Nepali language class enabled him to communicate effectively with his host family and the local community during his volunteering period.
On the second day, Federico had the opportunity to explore two of Kathmandu’s World Heritage sites with our tour guide, Sushil. The first stop was the Swayambhunath Temple, also known as the Monkey Temple. Swayambhunath is an ancient religious complex atop a hill in the Kathmandu Valley, offering panoramic views of the city. The stupa, adorned with the eyes of Buddha, is a symbol of enlightenment. The temple is a significant pilgrimage site for both Buddhists and Hindus.
Next, Federico visited the Pashupatinath Temple, one of the holiest Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Located on the banks of the Bagmati River, the temple complex is renowned for its stunning architecture and spiritual ambiance. The sacred grounds are a hub of religious activity, especially during the Maha Shivaratri festival.
During the first two weeks, Federico volunteered at a local school in Kathmandu. His days were filled with teaching English and Math to eager students. Federico’s enthusiasm and innovative teaching methods quickly made him a favorite among the children. He also helped organize extracurricular activities, including sports and arts and crafts, which were greatly appreciated by the students and teachers alike.
Federico’s presence at the school not only improved the students’ language and math skills but also boosted their confidence and motivation. His dedication and genuine care for the students left a lasting impact on the school community.
In the third week, Federico moved to a monastery in Kathmandu. Here, he taught English to young monks, who were keen to learn and interact with him. Federico’s patience and creativity in teaching made the learning process enjoyable for the monks. He also participated in the monastery’s daily routines, gaining a deeper understanding of Buddhist practices and philosophy.
Federico’s time at the monastery was a mutually enriching experience. He learned about the monks’ way of life, while the monks gained valuable language skills and cultural insights from Federico.
After three weeks of volunteering, Federico embarked on the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek. This trek is one of the most popular trekking routes in Nepal, known for its breathtaking views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. The trek takes you through lush rhododendron forests, charming villages, and terraced fields.
Federico’s trek to Poon Hill was a challenging yet rewarding experience. He trekked through picturesque landscapes, interacted with fellow trekkers, and experienced the warm hospitality of the local people. The highlight of the trek was the sunrise view from Poon Hill, where Federico witnessed the first light of day illuminating the majestic Himalayan peaks.
After returning from the trek, Federico spent his final week volunteering at a Buddhist monastery in Pokhara. Similar to his experience in Kathmandu, he taught English to young monks and engaged in various monastery activities. The serene environment of the monastery, coupled with the scenic beauty of Pokhara, made this week a memorable conclusion to his journey.
Federico’s 5-week volunteering and trekking program with Volunteer Society Nepal was a remarkable journey of learning, growth, and cultural exchange. His dedication to volunteering, coupled with his adventurous spirit, made a significant impact on the communities he served.
This experience also taught Federico valuable life lessons, such as resilience, empathy, and cross-cultural communication. His story is an inspiration to young people everywhere, proving that age is no barrier to making a difference and exploring the world.
