Introduction to Volunteer Society Nepal

Founded and run by experienced Nepali social workers, educators, and community leaders, Volunteer Society Nepal (VSN) provides international volunteers with authentic, safe, and impactful opportunities across Nepal. We bridge the gap between enthusiastic global volunteers and local communities in need of educational, developmental, and social support.

Whether you are on a gap year, career break, or sabbatical, VSN ensures your skills are matched to projects that generate genuine, long-term impact.

Meet Grace Siobhan Brennan: A Passion for Empowerment

Coming from the United Kingdom, Grace Siobhan Brennan brought enthusiasm, dedication, and warmth to Kathmandu. Grace chose VSN’s Women’s Empowerment Center to support local women in gaining financial independence, confidence, and foundational skills.

“Volunteering with Volunteer Society Nepal has been an eye-opening and rewarding experience. The resilience and enthusiasm of the women at the center are truly inspiring. Every lesson taught and every shared smile felt like a step toward positive change.”

The Mission of Our Women’s Empowerment Center

In many traditional communities in Nepal, women face systemic socio-economic barriers, limited formal education, and financial dependency. Our Women’s Empowerment Center in Kathmandu provides a safe space where women of all ages can acquire tools for independence.

Key Pillars of the Center:

  • Functional Literacy & English Communication: Teaching reading, writing, and conversational English for daily transactions and small business management.
  • Basic Mathematics & Accounting: Building essential financial literacy skills for household budgeting and micro-enterprises.
  • Computer & Digital Literacy: Introducing basic IT skills to navigate modern technology.
  • Rights & Health Awareness: Workshops covering women’s legal rights, reproductive health, sanitation, and nutrition.
  • Vocational Skill Training: Practical handiwork, tailoring, and artisan crafting to support micro-income generation.

Inside Grace’s 4-Week Volunteering Journey

Week 1: Arrival, Orientation, and Cultural Immersion

Grace’s journey began at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, where our VSN staff greeted her. Her first few days included:

  • Nepali Language Classes: Basic phrases and greetings to interact comfortably with host families and center participants.
  • Cultural Orientation: Guidance on local customs, traditional etiquette, and community norms.
  • Sightseeing Tours: Exploring UNESCO World Heritage sites across Kathmandu, including Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, and Swayambhunath.

Week 2: Teaching Functional English & Practical Numeracy

In her second week, Grace integrated into daily classes at the center:

  • Led interactive conversational English exercises tailored to real-world scenarios.
  • Facilitated basic mathematics lessons focused on managing household finances and market transactions.
  • Created visual learning charts and flashcards to make abstract concepts accessible.

Week 3: Skill-Building Workshops & Health Awareness

During her third week, Grace conducted targeted workshops:

  • Hosted confidence-building sessions and public speaking circles.
  • Organized health, hygiene, and wellness awareness activities.
  • Facilitated creative art and group activities that encouraged collaboration.

Week 4: Fostering Independence & Project Evaluation

In her final week, Grace reflected on progress and ensured continuity:

  • Reviewed individual progress with local co-teachers.
  • Developed resource packets for incoming volunteers to maintain teaching momentum.
  • Participated in a farewell ceremony filled with traditional music, dance, and gratitude.

The Impact of Ethical Volunteering in Nepal

Ethical volunteering focuses on sustainable outcomes rather than short-term relief. VSN ensures that every volunteer project:

  1. Complements Local Efforts: Volunteers work alongside Nepali staff rather than replacing local workers.
  2. Prioritizes Cultural Respect: Volunteers receive training to act responsibly and respectfully.
  3. Supports Community Growth: Program fees directly fund local charities, center overhead, and learning materials.

Cultural Immersion: Living with a Local Nepali Host Family

One of the highlights of Grace’s experience was her stay with a local Nepali host family in Kathmandu.

  • Private Accommodation: A comfortable room providing privacy and rest.
  • Authentic Cuisine: Two home-cooked meals daily featuring traditional Dal Bhat (lentils, rice, and vegetable curry).
  • Deep Connection: Participating in family routines, holiday celebrations, and everyday conversations.

Why Women’s Empowerment Matters in Nepal

Empowering women creates a positive ripple effect throughout families and whole communities. When a woman receives an education and financial training:

  • Household health, nutrition, and sanitation improve.
  • Children—especially daughters—are more likely to attend and stay in school.
  • Local economies grow through female-led micro-enterprises.
